Welcome to Preston Apartments. Do you know the area? Where is the closest supermarket? Where is the post office? Here is some useful information.

Goodfood Supermarket is on Main Street between First and Second Streets. It is open 24 hours a day. The food is fresh, and the prices are good. Preston Post office is on Main Street between First and Second Streets, too. It's is next to the supermarket. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and until 12 p.m. on Saturdays.

Ella's Gym is on Main Street between Second and Third Streets. It's at 45 Main Street. It's next to Drew's Drugstore. The gym is open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

DSL Bank is between Second and Maple Streets. It is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 to 12.

Preston Hospital is on the corner of Washington Street and Second Avenue. It's across from a gas station.

Prepositions of Place

The art museum is on First Avenue. It's across from an apartment building and a restaurant. It's at 10 First Avenue. It's on the corner of First Avenue and Main Street.

The bank is between the art museum and the post office. The restaurant is next to the movie theater.

Grammar Notes

Questions with Where

Use where to ask questions about location:

A: Where is the restaurant?
B: It's on First Avenue.

Where's is the short form of where is.

Prepositions of Place

In, on, at, next to, between, and across from are prepositions of place that tell the location of people, places, and things:

Examples:

  • My school is in Seattle.
  • The book is on the table.
  • I'm next to the door.

Prepositions in Addresses

We use prepositions in addresses:

  • in + country, state, province, country, or continent
  • on + street name and floors
  • at + street address

Usage Note: We don't always say street or avenue in informal speaking or writing.

Be Careful: Use ordinal numbers for streets and floors.

Exercise 8: Guess Where It Is

A. GAME: Work in a group. Take turns. Choose four classroom objects. One student places them on the table. The other students don't look.
